IN-PERSON and ZOOM
I would love to help you become a better singer, and a better musician.
I have sung professionally since age 14, performing many styles of rock, pop, jazz, soul, and even some classical. I studied with a few different teachers when I was younger (including a semester at the Royal Academy of Music in London), but I’ve also developed my techniques through decades of on-the-job experience, practice, and a lot of reflection. I could tell you about the hundreds of gigs and recording sessions I’ve done, but when you and I have a lesson, it’s all about YOU. Your voice, your style, your musicianship, your confidence… and I know we’ll both have fun while learning together!
Here are some of the things we would focus on in a lesson:
- Pitch/intonation: Probably THE most important part of singing. We’ll work on singing in tune and developing your “inner game” of singing with control, even in challenging situations.
- Tone: Good tone is usually considered a combination of “brilliance” and “warmth”, but your voice has its own unique, natural tone. Different styles of music and different songs can influence what tone is appropriate as well.
- Breath control: Controlling how much air passes through your vocal cords is very important, not just for singing long phrases, but for volume, expression, and overall control.
- Time and phrasing: Singing in time, feeling the beat, and being able to express the song in a natural and expressive way within a given tempo.
- Vocal registers: Chest voice, middle voice, head voice… every singer has to work at connecting or navigating these different vocal registers. It’s a life-long journey! We’ll work on connecting, blending, switching… giving you more control of how you use your instrument.
- Song interpretation: Singing is a lot like acting. What are you singing about? What is your attitude?
- Music theory: Even if you are intimidated about learning music theory, you’ll be surprised how much you will learn little by little! And that’s how anyone learns: little by little.
- Singers you love: I have my favorite singers, and I’m sure you have yours. We’ll talk about what makes them great, and how you can emulate them while still sounding like YOU.
- Gigging, recording, collaboration skills, vocal health, career advice… I could go on and on!
